This study conducted at Penn State University was designed to inform a redesign of the library facility integrating a Collaboration Commons projected to cost of over $20million dollars. Using a mixed-methods design employing observation, focus groups, interviews, and a UX Café investigated student workspace needs and the extent to which soft seating should be integrated into the design. Findings include students need well designed and equipped spaces for productivity over comfort.
